The city has done some serious work in the name of EDI and I'm happy with the progress in the last few months, especially. Our EDI Task Force did great work and made recommendations to Staff and Council on next steps. The fire slowed some of the progress down, but with the hiring of Monai Myles and the implementation of some important inclusive practices we are seeing a difference. As I've heard many times, we need to stop working ON EDI and start DOING EDI. Within the city, our hiring practices have improved and our language accessibility is much better. It takes time to signal a genuine desire to be an inclusive community and we will see the fruits of our labor over time.
Affordable Housing is clearly an important piece of the puzzle. Diversity takes all shapes and sizes, but opening up the City of Louisville to more people will c help us include more diverse voices and experiences into our conversations and daily interactions. The next generation of Americans is well versed in this language, and if we can create space for them to live here in our town we can learn so much from them. Young/old, black/white, gay/straight, rich/poor...they all have a place in community and in our lives. And of course, those binary examples of humans are another display of the work we need to do. Let's work on making space for all of our diversity and seeing each person's full, complex self.
